DOJ sues Walgreens for filling prescriptions without medical purpose – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

  • The Justice Department sued pharmacy giant Walgreens for allegedly dispensing millions of illegal prescriptions.
  • Walgreens from August 2012 until today “knowingly” filled these prescriptions, which “lacked a legitimate medical purpose, were not valid and/or were not issued in the ordinary course of business,” the DOJ said.

The Justice Department said Friday it was suing the pharmacy giant Walgreens for allegedly dispensing millions of illegal prescriptions.

The DOJ said that from August 2012 until now, Walgreens “knowingly” filled these prescriptions, which “lacked a legitimate medical purpose, were not valid, and/or were not issued in the ordinary course of business.”

“This lawsuit seeks to hold Walgreens accountable for the many years they have failed to meet their obligations in dispensing dangerous opioids and other drugs,” said Deputy Assistant Attorney General Brian Boynton, director of the DOJ’s Civil Division.

The lawsuit was filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Chicago.
