“Built of black history. Elevated by black voices. “

In 2024, Smith Entertainment Group (Seg) Black History celebrated Month by collecting the black book: a social resource intended to celebrate, lift and support black -owned companies in Utah. After a successful debut, we are pleased to get back an updated version of the black book, with previous companies emphasized and the addition of new ones.

During the Jim Crow laws, racism reached dangerous levels for black people. Segregation, intolerance and violence were just some of the atrocities that affected them regularly. The green book became a resource for black travelers to find safe places to log, eat and get gas. Written by Victor Hugo Green, The Green Book was published from 1936 to 1967 and became a sanctuary for those affected. Green was an American postal worker from Harlem, New York. When someone meets discrimination himself, he saw the need for a guide that allowed black travelers to avoid destinations with social obstacles and racial intolerance. For example, the motorists warned of “Sundown Towns”, which demanded that minorities be outside the city boundaries before sunset. Black travelers were dependent on the green book to protect themselves from violence and facilities that did not welcome them. Without Green’s 30+ years of contributions to the cause, it may have been little or no relief for these individuals.

Seg created the black book. While our society has made great progress in equality and equity over the years, there will continue to be work that must be done. The black book is a collection that highlights black-owned companies throughout the Salt Lake City area and Utah. From catering to music producers to makeup artists, the list of black -owned companies is extensive and versatile. We intend to provide visibility and encouragement by reaching the Utah Hockey Club audience. Last year, the black book saw great success in spreading awareness, and we hope that the updated version will continue to do so.

The black book will be available in the Utah Hockey Club and Delta Center apps. There, fans can learn about individual companies, where they lie and more background information about each.

As an organization, we recognize our influence on society in Utah (and then) and want to do our part to support where we can. During the game days at the Delta Center, we will take the time to recognize the non -profit organizations that we have collaborated with and how they give back to society.

At Seg, we believe in the power of society. With the Black Book project, we hope to promote this strength in our hometown and state.
