A storm comes: How HPC protects us against weather -related disasters

For most people, words such as algebra, algorithms and calculation mathematics can get back memories from educational struggle. But behind these abstract concepts lies a powerful, life-saving tool: high-performance computing (HPC). HPC utilizes advanced mathematics and huge processing power to manage calculations that were once unthinkable, making it necessary over a variety of disciplines, including meteorology.

Without HPC, our ability to predict natural disasters would be enormously reduced. From issuing hurricane warnings that allow mass development to predict floods before reaching populated areas, HPC allows meteorologists to convert data to actionable insights that save lives. In a world without HPC, many more lives would be lost to extreme weather.
