All-American concert raises money for Washburn students to pursue dreams

Topeka, can. (Wibw) – Sigma Alpha ITA invited Topeka to tune in to an All -American concert in White Concert Hall on February 2.

“We will hear many marches many show songs and we have music composed of Americans,” said Sigma Alpha Iota Topeka Alumnae President Lana Balka.

The band consisted of 60 musicians from all over the capital. Director Stephen Patterson says the show had something for everyone.

“We play a lot of patriotic music,” Patterson said. “It is also important for the university and women in the brotherhood as well. In addition, it gives the band members who do not have places to play during the winter, it gives them a chance to play. “

The event was only $ 5 to participate in all proceeds that go back to student grants.

“The teaching is expensive today and our scholarships are not so huge, but I think most people who apply add the money to teaching,” Sigma Alpha Iota Topeka Alumnae said Norma Pettijohn. “It may be possible to buy music for their instruments or repairs for their instruments, just anything that has to do with their musical activities at Washburn.”

These scholarships allow women to promote their dreams in music.

“The people in the band are some of our scholarships for one thing and some of them are teachers in the Topeka community and they have gone in their music careers here and other places because they got help with our scholarships,” Balka said.
