Ga. Residents urged to participate in difficult weather preparedness week

Albany, Ga. (Walb) – All Georgians have been asked to participate in difficult weather preparedness week from February 3-7.

Southern Georgia is not a stranger to severe weather. In 2024, several tornadoes, harmful winds, large hail and two hurricanes caused damage throughout the region. It is crucial to be ready for severe weather throughout the year.

As severe weather continues to be an issue in Georgia’s spring time, Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency together with the National Weather Service urges residents to stay conscious and vigilant.

“Serious weather preparedness week is a critical time to reflect on these events and make sure we are ready for the next challenge,” said Gema/HS director Chris Stallings. “By learning security tips, reviewing emergency plans and keeping us prepared, we can protect our families, homes and communities from the influence of natural disasters. Preparations today can make all the difference tomorrow. “

According to an edition from Georgia Emahs, substances to be covered every day are the following:

  • Monday 3 February family’s readiness/Noaa Weather Radio Day: Buy a NOAA weather radio and choose an out-of-state friend as a “check-in” contact to call if your family is separated.
  • Tuesday 4 February – Thunderstorm Safety: Learn the difference between a thunderstorm and a thunderstorm warning.
  • Wednesday, February 5 – Tornado Safety (Drill at 9:30): Decide in advance where you take protection in the event of a tornado warning.
  • Thursday 6 February – Lightning Safety: Learn the rule 30/30. If you don’t count to 30 before you hear the thunderstorm after seeing lightning. Stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last pat of thunder.
  • Friday February 7 – Flood Safety: Copy important documents, seal them in a waterproof container and add them to your finished kit.
