Walker fell to the ground and held his face but replays showed there had been little contact between them.

Roy Keane and Gary Neville both branded veteran defender Walker’s actions “embarrassing”.

United and Höglund had the last laugh as they grabbed all three points thanks to late goals from Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo.

And Manchester United forward Höglund couldn’t resist taking a jab at Walker when he shared a cheeky message on Instagram after the team’s dramatic victory.

Hojlund shared a picture of his confrontation with Walker and wrote: “Manchester is red. Violets are blue “What a brilliant performance. But Oscar goes to…”

Walker’s theatrical fall to the turf was knocked off Keane at half-time, with the former United skipper calling the defender’s behavior “embarrassing”.

Their quarrel originated in a foul by Walker on Hojlund, which prompted an angry reaction from the Dane.

A melee ensued between players from both teams before referee Anthony Taylor gave both Walker and Hojlund a yellow card.

Reacting at half-time, Keane scoffed: “You don’t mind this, this is going to happen in a game, a bit angry bargy, of course.

“He’s obviously been blocked, but Walker… it’s clear it’s a foul and a free kick and Hojlund is not happy and that’s fine.

“But then he goes over, how can Walker (go down)? He should be ashamed. He should be ashamed to go down like that.

“An experienced player, this is no contact. Look at this! I don’t know the guy and I’m ashamed of him.”

Höglund went on to have the last laugh after the Red Devils’ late turnaround.

The win meant United avoided losing three league games in a row for the first time since 2015.

However, they remain 13th in the Premier League despite securing their sixth win of the campaign.

As for City, the champions have now won just one of their last 11 games in all competitions.
