Champions Trophy 2025: Can South Africa overcome Bad ODI form to beat gold?

South Africa’s dominant test performances, which secured them a place in the World Test Championship final together with Australia, shows off their potential. But their inconsistent ODI form has been a problem and increased the tension among fans. While the Tri-Series collision loss to Pakistan Will add salt to their worries, the problem for the proteas goes beyond.

Proteas opens its Champions Trophy campaign against Afghanistan on February 21 and aims to set a strong tone for the tournament.

Can the batting lineup deliver?

On paper, South Africa has one of the most formidable batting arrangements in the tournament. The troop has Temba Bavuma, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Tristan Stubbs, Ryan Rickelton and Marco Jansen – players known for their firepower in tests and T20IS. But replicating that dominance in the ODI format has been a struggle.

Their latest series losses to Pakistan, Afghanistan and India revealed their batting consequences. If South Africa’s highest order and middle order can find their rhythm, they have the ability to dominate all bowling attacks. The Champions Trophy will be the ultimate test of if they can finally rise at the moment.

Will Maharaj and Shamsi be enough?

South Africa’s spin attack will rely strongly on Tabraiz Shamsi and Keshav Maharaj. Although both have produced match -winning performances in the past, inconsistency remains a concern, especially for Shamsi. But with proteas that played all their group steps in Pakistan, the spin -friendly conditions can benefit their bowling attack.

Maharaj’s ability to control the game with its exact left arm spin will be crucial, while Shamsis Wicket-Ta ability can provide an attacking edge. Their conceptions will be the key to ensuring South Africa remains competitive, especially on areas that traditionally help spinners.

Damage Woes: A concern for the proteas

Injuries have plagued South Africa on the way into the Champions Trophy. Anrich Nortje has already been excludedwith Corbin Bosch who replaces him. David Miller’s groin injury, maintained during Sa20remains a problem, as well as Lungi Ngidi’s recurring fitness problems, which shortened his home test season.

Whether the proteas can field their strongest XI will be due to the recovery of these key players. If the fitness problems remain, their depth will be tested against top level.

South Africa’s ODI form since VM 2023

Since their semi-final output in the 2023 World Cup, South Africa’s ODI form has been inconsistent. In the latest Tri-Nation series on February 12, 2025, they published 352/5 against Pakistan, with prominent performances from Temba Bavuma (82), Matthew Breetzke (83) and Heinrich Klaasen (87). However, Pakistan chased the target with six balls to reserve.

Earlier, in September 2024, South Africa led a heavy 177-run defeat against Afghanistan in Sharjah. Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s Century and Rashid Khan’s five-wicket-draw disassembled Proteas and sealed Afghanistan’s series victory.

Despite flashes of gloss, South Africa has struggled to maintain consistency in ODIs and caused concern before the Champions Trophy.

South Africa’s best champion trophy performance

South Africa’s largest ICC Champions Trophy moment came in 1998 when they won the first edition in Bangladesh. During Hansie Cronjes captivity, the team remained undefeated throughout the tournament. In the final against West Indies, Jacques Kallis delivered a fantastic all-round performance, took 5/30 and got 37 runs. South Africa successfully chased 246 and secured its first and only ICC trophy to date.

As 2025 Champions Trophy approaches, Proteas hopes to replicate the historical success and finally break its ICC tournament.
