NPD warns the public of identity fraud

A resident of Nelson was the goal of multiple fraudulent calls after a data breach compromised their identity.

The Nelson Police Department was called this week by a resident of Nelson who had been the target of an identity fraud.

“Fraud is the most common crime in Canada,” Special Const said. Silk Edwards, “It is important to learn about the techniques that fraudsters use and take steps to protect yourself.”

The identity of the call had previously been compromised by a data violation of internal health. Since then, they had received calls from an unknown number. After responding, they were informed that they owed $ 4,000 due to an excessive account with a company they had never knocked with.

The police advised the person calling to contact Equifax and Transunion to ensure that no accounts had been opened in their name and to reach the bank’s anti-fraud department. No money had been taken from any of their accounts.

If people find out that their information has leaked into a data violation, it is important to take proactive measures to protect from identity fraud.

“Accounts can be opened in your name without you finding out, which can adversely affect your credit rating,” Special Const said. Edwards.

If you think you have been affected by this type of integrity violation, you can contact the Nelson Police Department.
