Reform UK’s vice leader makes a bizarre comparison with Northern Ireland’s peace process as he creeps to deny Donald Trump betraying Ukraine with Vladimir Putin call

Reform Britain’s vice leaders were ridiculed today for making a comparison between Donald Trump’s negotiations on Ukraine and Northern Ireland’s peace process.

Richard Tice, MP for Boston and Skegness, tried the analogy as he was rushing to deny the US president Kiev, by starting peace talks with Russia.

Trump stunned European capitals yesterday by announcing that he had had a 90-minute conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine.

The US president has been accused of “satisfaction” for Putin after his administration said it did not support Ukraine who joined NATO as part of a solution.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hesgeth also suggested that Kyiv may have to refrain from territory to Russia after claiming a return to Ukraine’s borders before 2014 was “unrealistic”.

The reform leader Nigel Farage has close ties to Trump’s team and Tice defended the US presidents when he appeared on Talkv this morning.

He insisted “most wars ending with some form of negotiations”, but failed to offer an example when he was challenged over the result of the Second World War or the Falkand War.

In a burning collision with host Julia Hartley-Brewer, Tice also admitted that he would not refrain from any British territory if Britain were to find himself in a similar position as Ukraine.

On the question of Trump, Ukraine betrayed by starting peace negotiations with Russia, Tice said: ‘No, I don’t think so.

“I think it’s a recognition that most wars end with some form of negotiations.”

He added: ‘Most wars end with some form of negotiations to try to stop killing people.

“It is perfectly reasonable for a new president to come in and say” we must stop trying to kill people and devastation and destruction “.

“And see if any kind of negotiations can work for everyone. Maybe not.”

Continued its defense of Trump’s actions said Reform MP: ‘It makes no sense to try to pretend that you can give weapons when we have not received weapons.

“You can’t pretend you can give the money if we don’t have the money. That’s the reality, whether people like it or not.

“At some point, someone must have the courage to say” we have to stop killing people “.

“What Ukraine has done, with our support, is to get in a position where Russia clearly realizes that it cannot win.

“So at some point someone must say” we have to stop this “. How should we stop it? Where are the negotiations? Everything that is to play for.

“But the idea that you never negotiate, you just keep writing checks and continue killing people, can’t last forever.”

When asked which part of Britain he would be willing to give up during peace negotiations, if the UK had been invaded, Tice replied: “None at all.”

“It’s not us who give it away, it’s Ukraine,” he added.

Pressed again, the Deputy Leader of the Reform continued: ‘In the end in Northern Ireland, there was a negotiation to stop the murder.

“It was about terrible compromises that many did not want to do.”

Told he did a “ridiculous analogy”, Mr Tice respected: “It’s a completely valid analogy. War ends when people stop killing people.”

He continued: ‘You clearly do not understand how President Trump works. He starts in a position, that does not mean that this is where he settles.

“The whole point of a negotiation – you put out positions and then you train where you should finish.”

When asked if Trump had already given Mr Putin everything he wants by roaming Ukraine’s hope of joining NATO or recovering all its territory, Tice said: “I fully hold.”

“We absolutely care about national boundaries and sovereignty,” he added.

“In the same way we do not want to continue killing people, we do not kill people, but in the end the war must somehow end.

‘It’s been three years – how long do we continue? One decade, two decades? ‘

Mr Farage last night said it was “substantially” Ukraine going with NATO.

The reform leader said: ‘I think where we are now … I do not want to predict how these negotiations are going, but I would have thought that if we can come to a place and zelensky to a place where we have a reasonable negotiation, I Would have thought to look ahead, it is probably important that Ukraine go with NATO.

“It will have to be a part of this negotiation. It’s a guess, but that’s where I see this go.”
