Police have said that 24 people died in a tragic accident at Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway on Thursday around 8 o’clock.

In a statement, the national police spokesman commissioner Paul Nyathi said that a city connection bus that transported 65 passengers had a head on collision with an Auro Transport Travage truck with four residents, resulting in the death of 24 people.

“The bus went from Harare to Beitbridge while the truck was traveling in the opposite direction,” said Commissioner Nyathi.

He said that preliminary investigations indicate that the accident occurred when the bus tried to take over another vehicle.

“The number of injured is still determined. The victims’ bodies have been taken to the Beitbridge District Hospital Mortuary for death, while the injured receive treatment in the same hospital, says Commissioner Nyathi.

He said the police are investigating the stage and more information will be released when they become available.
