Eagles DC reveals a bizarre reason why the team shouldn’t make a big deal before the deadline

The NFL The trade deadline is set to close on November 5th at 16 EST. Teams trying to bolster their rosters to ensure a playoff berth will likely be very busy that day, or the days leading up to it. One team that may not be busy is the Philadelphia Eagles, at least according to defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.

Fangio isn’t known for mincing his words, and he bluntly said the Eagles shouldn’t try to make a big deal when the deadline rolls around. Asked if the team should address any position via a trade, Fangio said, “No.”

Fangio also stated that the bizarre reason behind not wanting to take any positions at the trade deadline is related to the fact that trades made by the deadline rarely work. It’s a rather odd stance to take, as many players traded at the deadline often go on to be good for the respective teams they’ve joined.

Take Von Miller, for example. Miller had been with the Buffalo Bills for many years and was traded to the Los Angeles Rams at the November 2021 trade deadline. Miller and the Rams would go on to win the Super Bowl that season.

Sure, you could argue that Miller wasn’t the catalyst or deciding factor that led to the Rams winning the championship, but he certainly helped a lot. In just eight games with the Rams in 2021, he secured five sacks.

The Eagles would do well to add an edge rusher to their defense, as they are currently a middle of the pack team with 20 total sacks. Current edge rushers Milton Williams and Jalen Carter have five total sacks between them, which is good, but more pass-rush help would be welcome.

While Fangio isn’t open to the idea of making big trades, there are a few names that should be considered. Take Cleveland Browns Myles Garrett. He may not be on the trade block, but anyone would be a perennial defensive giant with Garrett added to the lineup.

The Eagles opted to trade Haason Reddick to the New York Jets, effectively losing their best edge rusher. Again, Philadelphia would do well to explore the possibility of adding an edge rusher who can constantly get after the quarterback.

The Eagles are 5-2 on the season and are one game behind the Washington Commanders in the NFC East. Although they have a favorable record and can challenge their division rivals for the division crown, the team is far from complete.

Fangio may think players added at the trade deadline are a bad choice, but teams that go all-in are often the ones that take the bigger risks and try to add quality players at the deadline.
