Everything you need to know about voting in the Iowa general election

Election 2024: Today — go and vote!

Polls are open from 8am to 8pm on Tuesday, and while many voters have already cast their ballots early and by post, with a turnout of up to 72% expected, it’s possible that things could get crowded at your polling station, especially during rush hour .

Officials have also encouraged voters to use ballot boxes, which will be collected one last time as the polls close. Find one near you:

And if for some reason you can’t get to your assigned polling station, you can always go to any polling station and request a provisional ballot. Both Nebraska and Iowa allow this.

Know before you go

VoterID is a requirement in both Nebraska and Iowabut each state has its own list of acceptable forms of identification.

Iowa allows voters to register on election day; but Nebraska not.

If you have recently moved, you may need to do this prove your residence with an electricity bill, bank statement, paycheck or the government document that has your new address printed on it.

The Secretary of State wants to remind Nebraska voters that it is illegal to campaign or election within 200 feet of the entrance to a polling station. With this, you are not allowed to wear campaign items such as buttons, stickers or T-shirts when you go to vote.

Report a problem

Election security has been top of mind for local election officials. But if you encounter an emergency while casting your vote, they urge you to call 911 — and note that poll workers also have an emergency number they can call.

Call the office at 402-444-VOTE for incidents at polling places in Douglas County that do not require immediate attention, but still merit reporting. The Sarpy County Election Commission office can be reached at 402-593-2167.

To report a problem with Nebraska elections, call the Elections Division of the Secretary of State’s office at 1-888-727-0007 or 402-471-2555 between 08.00 and 17.00

Iowans can report problems via The website of the Minister of Foreign Affairs; or by calling the voice line at 1-888-SOS-VOTE (767-8683).

Race to watch

While a survey in Iowa sparked much debate across the country about election votes during the weekend, the presidential election isn’t the only race that will keep voters on the edge of their seats as results come in Tuesday night.

Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District — home to the state’s “blue dot” — is once again a close race between incumbent Republican Rep. Don Bacon and Democrat Tony Vargas. Bacon narrowly defeated Vargas year 2022.

Nebraskans will also be waiting to see how the Senate battles between longtime incumbents Deb Fischer and independent challengers Dan Osborne shakes out.

Down the ticket, Nebraskans will also vote on several hard-fought ballot initiatives, including school vouchers; opposes abortion measures; and medical marijuana, although its very appearance on the ballot continues to get through the courts.

Iowans will also keep an eye on the state’s 3rd District Congressional Race. Incumbent Republican Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks is in a tight race with Democratic challenger Christina Bohannan.
