After Juan Soto signed with the New York Mets, all eyes turned to Corbin Burnes, the coveted prize of the starter market.

There have been reports that many teams are in the mix, including the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles. However, two other teams have emerged as frontrunners for the 2021 NL Cy Young winner.

Mark Feinsand reports San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays to be the favorites to sign Burnes, with Jon Morosi adding that the Giants could be in pole position.

It’s clear that both teams aren’t afraid to shell out a lot of money for just one player. The Giants spent $182 million earlier this offseason on Willy Adames while the Blue Jays were reportedly in the mix for Soto until the very end.

The Giants are still searching for their Blake Snell replacement after he left free agency for the Los Angeles Dodgers. On the other hand, the Blue Jays are looking for someone to complement their current rotation of Kevin Gausman, Chris Bassitt and Jose Berrios.

Burne’s market value is currently listed at $30.6 million per year. Feinsand added that there is speculation that the deal for Burnes could exceed $245 million.

It’s important to note that Burnes is from Bakersfield, California—about five hours south of San Francisco. He also attended college at Saint Mary’s College. The California connection is certainly there if the Giants can convince him to come back to the West Coast.

Burnes doesn’t appear to be in a rush to sign his massive contract, but neither the Giants nor the Blue Jays appear to be backing down anytime soon.
