How many recon, gray import cars sold in Malaysia? We compare MAA sales and JPJ registration data

Grey-imported or renovated cars, or “recons” to you and me, are big business in Malaysia, and while most car companies pretend they are not there, they form a significant part of the local car industry. But how big a pie does these importers and retailers take on sales?

To find out that we compare 2024 sales data companies that send to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) with actual registration data from the Road Transport Department (JPJ). The latter would generally be the higher figure as it includes all Registrations, including re -concerts. As such, we can see how many cars are registered outside the official dealer networks.

No surprises to guess which brand has the most gray import. Toyota cars make up over half of the reconstructions with 26,501 sold vehicles, mostly consisting of Alphards, Vellfires and Hares Like a handful Noahs, Voxys and Branch Models. The official distributor UMW Toyota Motor sold 100,701 vehicles, which means that almost 21% of the 127 202 registered Toyotas came outside the official network.

Rather more shocking was almost 75% of the 6,431 Lexus vehicles registered last year Recon cars, probably the popular Nx and RX. The fact that the brand orders the second highest number of gray market sales (4,815 units) from such a low total volume is completely crazy and means that only one of four Lexus cars that reached the customers’ hands in 2024 actually came out of a Lexus Malaysia showroom.

Keep in mind that Mercedes-Benz was not so far behind with 4,773 recon vehicles sold last year, out of 11,887 total registrations. Over 40% of three -pointed star buyers bought their (no doubt expensive) cars without an official guarantee, which is very brave.

However, Stuttgart’s Arch Rival BMW is nowhere to be found. In fact, BMW Group Malaysia actually left a higher number of sales to MAA than JPJ registrations, which is practically impossible unless the company managed to sell cars without registering them. It also seems unlikely that there was no recon BMW sales compared to almost 5,000 Recon Merca sales-not at least because a brief browsing through the classifications revealed several gray markets BMW’s for sale right now.

Nissan was another brand that reported higher figures to MAA compared to JPJ sales, and given the number of gray market GT-RS on the road, these figures may not be correct. Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) has accused other brands of does not report exact figures to MAA before.

Behind Mercedes, Honda, with 3,574 gray units sold last year, was only 4.2% of the 85,273 total cars registered. These will have included the popular Civic Type r but also a growing number Styvwgnsreflected in the amount we see on the road today. Maybe Honda Malaysia should consider officially importing medium -sized MPV – the car was already Preview in Indonesia last year.

Surprisingly, more than half of the 2,704 Porsches that were sold last year were reconvenue and earned the fifth place in the scaffolding with 1,401 units. A large majority of them will be MacansBut there will also be a few Taycans Imported from Japan, utilizes the ongoing tax relief for CBU fully imported electric vehicles.

These will be cheaper than the official units but are disadvantaged by using AC and CHADEMO DC charging gates, which require adapters to connect type 2 AC and CCS2 DC chargers that are usually found in Malaysia. Nor do they come with Sime Darby Auto Performance’s (SDAP) eight -year -old battery guarantee, which means that buyers who require a battery change along the line will meet a serious count.

Next on the list is Land Rover, of which an astonishing 93% of the 1,024 total registrations were from the gray market. It is not surprising considering how much officially imported full fat content Range Rovers and Range Rover Sports Cost nowadays, all retail north of RM1.5 million. These cars still do not come up with an official guarantee that, given the brand’s reputation for (UN) reliability, makes its owners even braver than those who bought Recon Mercs.

The last company with more recon registrations than official sales is Suzuki. Out of a total of 1,504 registered units came 824 from the gray market, including the latest Fast sport and Jimny -To all are much cheaper than the stratosphic priced new models that come from Naza Eastern Motors (NEM). Over to you – are you surprised at these numbers? Sounds in the comments after the jump.
