The locals and officials were concerned about the ominous change to the river, which is the country’s most important water source.

The phenomenon was filmed between Trujillo bridge and Chabuca Grata Avenue in the center of Lima.

Witnesses had no explanation for the striking vision and took to social media to share their surprise.

One wrote: “I passed just the yellow line and the river Rímac is red at this time!”

Another said: “Here’s the river Rímac is red”, along with pictures of the stage.

Maria Angelica Villasante, an environmental expert, explained that the color change was not the work on a “curse”, which some speculation suggested.

Rather, she believes it is a result of colored pollutants that float in the water from industrial Plants in the area.

There are at least 30 operational mines in the surrounding Santa Eulalia pool and more than 500 drainage pipes that float directly into the river.

Maria believes that emissions from these mines are what colored water.

The local water supplier, Sedapal, acknowledged the strange color change, but insisted that the water was still safe to drink.

The company said that “collection and treatment of water in our plants continues as normal and follows strict quality standards”.

The treated staining and said: “The change in the color of the water occurs downstream of our intake gates, so it does not pose a risk of the supply process.”

It confirmed its commitment to delivering “quality drinking water to the population and ensuring a safe and reliable service”.

The National Water Authority said it had visited the river and taken samples.

It promised: “We will continue to fulfill our supervisory role by measuring the quality of water from natural sources to deliver the results to the competent authorities, and if any change is found, corresponding measures will be taken as soon as possible.”

The Rimac River is 160 km long and divides the northern and southern regions in the capital.
