Stephen Crichton says Canterbury Bulldogs depends on winning, sleeping giants want more

Canterbury returned to the final for the first time since 2016 thanks to a large extent to the arrival of Stephen Crichton, who joined the new leadership role and brought Penrith’s winning culture to a club that has starved by success.

The results were almost immediately with their smaller forward package that caused devastation in the middle, while their attack improved and the defensive decision returned under the leadership of Cameron Ciraldo.

The bulldogs not only reached the final but hosted a game in week one, just for Manly to storm home to beat them out in front of a rough audience that was dormant for several years but has woken up from their sleep to turn Belmore into Sydney’s biggest outdoors party after every win.

It’s hard to stop eating Pringles when you open a package, but Crichton says the winning feeling in the club is even more addictive when they look to raise the bar in 2025.

“We met new heights last year, but that’s the level we have to come to and pass by now,” he said.

“These are expectations we have right now. We didn’t really have an expectation last year, but now we do based on winning games.

“I feel that it is a good pressure to have, and it goes back to be process driven during training and then come to these moments (in play) and win them.

“Now that we have had a small taste of being around these pressure moments (we want more).

“It obviously no longer went into the final last year, but the experience we had for the younger boys to feel the energy in the final game and know that final games are different, it is a massive spring well for where we want to get to.

“We are moving in the right direction so it’s a really exciting time for the club.”

Crichton is usually mentally and physically gassed at the end of the year considering that he won several titles with Panthers and often has origin or international commitments with Samoa.

But this low season was a little different, with Superstar Center who got married and enjoyed a honeymoon in Hawaii instead of traveling to England for a couple of tests with their beloved brothers in blue.

“With the kind of sport we play, it was good to put your hair and relax the body and mind to prepare for next season,” he said.

“International Footy is always good to play, but I feel you need that time to let the body relax and restore. I had a good during the low season.

“This (before the season) was definitely more difficult. It will never be easier (when you get older), but it’s something you have to put in the bank to play the type of sport we do. “
